What Orlando is talking about

Bars just got a much-needed extension on renewing their liquor licenses, but is it enough to save them? In short, the answer is no. However, Gov. DeSantis said Friday that he would push the deadline to Dec. 31, buying bars more time (and fingers crossed 🤞 the government) to figure out the next steps needed to save our favorite watering holes. You can now rent a boat or a camper through an app much like you would get an Airbnb. Use GetMyBoat to virtually rent a boat (or rent out your own — which btw, can we be friends?) and download Outdoorsy to make your airstream dreams come true. (Orlando Weekly)

Orlando Weekly had a big week last week —  the alt-weekly shared its Best of Orlando winners before unveiling its new Annual Manual, which included the 2020 City Guide. It’s all here for your enjoyment and perusal. 👉 (Orlando Weekly)

Speaking of getting outdoors, Seminole County is moving forward with plans to build a new paved path that will link the north end of Casselberry with the 23-mile Cross Seminole Trail. This will connect to the Florida Coast-to-Coast trail, a trail system that runs from St. Petersburg to Titusville. (Orlando Sentinel)

And speaking of bike paths, the Orange County Parks and Recreation Division wants your feedback on its newly updated Trails Master Plan. Weigh-in between now and Sept. 10th at 11:59 p.m. at OcflTrailsPlan.com. (The Daily City, Reddit)

NASA announced it has assigned a Black female astronaut to an extended stint at the International Space Station for the first time ever. Jeanette Epps will fly aboard the first operational crew flight of the Boeing CST-100 Starliner in 2021 to ISS where she’ll live with her crew for six months. (Orlando Sentinel)

In COVID-19 news…

Hospitalizations and fatalities from COVID-19 are officially on the decline in Florida. According to the Florida Department of Health, the state reported 2,583 new COVID-19 cases, 14 new fatalities, and 96 new hospitalizations on Sunday, with 3,792 patients currently hospitalized with coronavirus in Florida. (ClickOrlando)

COVID fatigue is a real thing, and public health experts say now is not the time to get complacent. The Herald reported that testing has dropped by 31 percent, and two-thirds of people who’ve been in contact with someone who has had the coronavirus choose not to participate in contact tracing or cannot be reached. (Miami Herald)

According to Orange County officials, 117 people have been quarantined after 36 cases of COVID-19 were reported in Orange County Public Schools, a week into in-person learning. (ClickOrlando)

Gov. DeSantis and airlines say it’s safe to fly and that you’re not at a major risk of catching COVID-19 on a plane. However, there’s really no major data to prove it, because contact tracing doesn’t really exist for airline passengers at the moment. (ClickOrlando)
