What Orlando is talking about

Orlando-area workers who make minimum wage would need to work 96 hours a week to afford a one-bedroom apartment here according to this new study by the National Low Income Housing Coalition. Another fun fact: Florida is currently the 12th most expensive state for renters in the country. (Orlando Weekly)

Is breaking records getting old yet? Yesterday Florida recorded more coronavirus deaths than any other state (including Texas which has 25 percent more people). It was the state’s second-highest number of COVID-19 deaths in a 24-hour period. The Sunshine State also reported a record-breaking 518 new hospitalizations. P.S. If you’ve tested positive for the coronavirus and have since recovered, you should consider donating your convalescent plasma. (Orlando Weekly)

Filed under things I never knew I’d type, teachers are writing living wills now more than ever. Because ya know, COVID-19. In response, XL106.7 is partnering with Orlando Law Group and offering free wills for teachers. As of 8 a.m., any teacher or faculty member can sign up for one. (XL106.7)

If you’re an avid Good Morning America watcher, you might’ve recognized a familiar face in yesterday’s morning show. One of the two local women behind a recent lawsuit against Gov. DeSantis appeared on GMA to talk about why they’re hoping to block Florida schools from reopening next month. (GMA)

The NBA unveiled a Black Lives Matter mural on the court it’ll use when the season restarts here in Orlando in a little over a week. P.S. The bubble seems to be working as the number of positive COVID-19 tests went from two to zero this week. (ESPN, Sports Illustrated)

Drive-in movies are cool, but how about those dive-ins, yeah? (Don’t steal that idea, my fiancé has only been talking about it for years!) But for real, there’s a floating cinema coming to Orlando for five days in September and you can “buy” the whole boat to really ensure proper social distancing. (WESH)

What we love about the library

Guess what time it is? Every Wednesday we share three to five new reasons we love our local library and today, we’re back with reasons number 29 through 33. To be honest, this list might just be our favorite yet.

#29 Melrose in the Mix: The live recording series by WUCF highlights local artists recording an album in front of an intimate audience and really highlights OCLS’s Melrose Center space. Jump into AMiAM’s performance – he shares some slick dance moves and also goes into his musical inspirations.

#30 At-home workouts: Get inspired with at-home workout options through videos on Overdrive and Hoopla.

#31 Mobile check out: Not in the mood to talk to anyone while visiting the library in person? Try cloudLibrary. It’s an app that allows your phone to scan books for you to check out. Just be sure to stop by the Fastlane check out station to deactivate your items.

#32 Interview Like a Pro: Hear super practical tips to help you practice and prepare for your next job interview. Register in advance for Tuesday’s session.

#33 Farm-to-Cup Coffee: Jarrett Johnson of Lineage Coffee will share how he and his coffee-loving crew picks the perfect bean. RSVP for this caffeinated class.

Check out #’s 1-28 on the Pulptown site and if you have your own favorite thing to add, drop it in the comments here.
