What Orlando is talking about

Tomorrow marks the 50th anniversary since astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed on the moon and there are lots of ways to celebrate around town.

You can start by putting on your best space gear and heading to the downtown library for One Giant Leap: A 50th Anniversary Celebration of the Moon Landing. They partnered with WUCF and the Orange County Regional History Center to commemorate the anniversary and have a slew of family activities, guest speakers and virtual reality opportunities planned.

There’s also a two-day Moon Fest happening at Orlando Science Center tomorrow and Sunday full of live shows, space-themed experiments and astronaut-like experiences. You can create your own galactic tee at The Hive, dance along to The Beatles and Pink Floyd: Dark Side of the Moon, and Saturday only, stick around for Science After Sundown with telescope viewings from the terrace.

Or you could drive over to Kennedy Space Center where the real magic happened and relive the experience of the Apollo 11 flight.

Wherever you go this weekend, get in the moo(n)d with this lunar-themed playlist.

Also, how cool is it to have had all this in our backyard all this time?

In other news…

Orlando will make national news this weekend but it won’t be pretty. The horrific 2015 rape and murder of Sasha Samsudean will be the subject of Saturday’s “HLN’s Lies, Crimes & Video”. (Orlando Weekly)

The city of Orlando will discontinue Amazon’s high-tech facial recognition program due to a  lack of resources. The city has used Amazon’s Rekognition since December 2017 and local citizens weren’t thrilled. (Orlando Sentinel)

And in tasty news…

Plant-based chef Mary Westfall of Winter Park Biscuit Co. fame is looking to develop her own vegan version of a Pub-Sub and YOU can help her make it happen. (Orlando Weekly)

You can now go on a proper hot pot tour of Orlando, thanks to these recommendations on the Tasty Chomps blog. (Tasty Chomps)

Or switch it up and “eat around the world” at these globally diverse restaurants on I-Drive. (Orlando Date Night Guide)

We’re sticking with the theme.

“I met Katie at The Dinner Party Project’s Women Lead Orlando dinner last year, and I had just moved to Orlando. I was looking for ways to connect on a local level, and Pulptown seemed right up my alley to find out about local events! I’ve been a reader since nearly Day 1 and tell everyone to sign up, so I was quick to jump on the membership option when it launched!” —Arielle R.

Let's get creative together ...

We’ve recently teamed up with local freelance creative collective, Jolly Roger, to give small business owners and entrepreneurs what we think could be a contest of a lifetime.

After a longtime history of working in ad agencies around Central Florida, freelance creative director, Brandy Gill, and his business partner, Mark Robertson, left the corporate world to start their own thing. That’s when Jolly Roger was formed. Then a month ago, Gill approached us about an idea he and Robertson had.

In an effort to pay it forward, they’re offering their expert services for free to one small business who needs their help with branding, marketing or advertising and they’re hoping our Pulptown readers might know the perfect someone.

Are you that somebody? Or know someone who needs a new logo, an updated website, or help with their story? All you have to do is fill out this form then team Jolly Roger and team Pulptown will narrow the search down to three finalists. Once we’ve chosen our top three entrants, we’ll leave it up to you, our readers, to vote on the winner.

The catch? Jolly Roger has the final say in the creative, meaning the winner of the free work will own it but they have to accept it as is. At that point, they can decide not to use it if they want (they won’t) but if they do use it, they can’t tweak it or change it.

That’s it.

Nominate yourselves or someone you know here. You’ve got until Friday, August 2. Let’s get creative, Orlando.
