💪 Brush your shoulders off, Orlando

When I moved here 12 years ago, I would drive past the miniature replica of Lady Liberty at Lake Ivanhoe and wonder how it got there. A few years back, I heard that it was part of a nationwide Boy Scouts initiative from the 50s. More on the story here: https://bit.ly/2OPUKNr.

DRUMROLL, PLEASE

Two weeks ago, we asked you to send us your burning questions about Orlando, the ones that haunt you while you lie awake at night. We asked for questions about Orlando, its history, its culture, and the people living here. Now we need your help in deciding what to investigate first.

Here are the three finalists for our first voting round for The City Curious:

  1. What and where are the oldest and largest trees in Orlando and the surrounding areas?
  2. What is there to do at each SunRail stop? Which ones have walkable attractions and which are good for basically park-and-ride?
  3. Are the murals that are popping up around town commissioned by the City of Orlando? What is that process for each surrounding city?

Vote here for the question you’d most like us to dig into, and look out for another round of The City Curious voting next week.

And FYI, we’re always taking your questions here. Let us know what you’re curious about, Orlando, and we’ll go get answers. As always, we’re only one email away.

WHAT'S GOING DOWN IN PULPTOWN?

Working it. In July, The Sunshine State achieved 3.7 percent unemployment — the lowest unemployment rate in more than a decade — and the Orlando area played a big part in it. Orlando created 53,900 new private-sector jobs in the past year, just over a quarter of the state’s total new private-sector jobs. (Orlando Business Journal)

Early votes add up. As of last Wednesday, more than 26,000 people already cast ballots in Florida elections. Of the 26,000 that have voted, 13,340 were Democrats, 11,288 were Republican and the remainder had no party affiliation or identified with other parties. Early voting runs through Thursday, August 25 in Lake County and Seminole County and Friday, August 26 in Orange and Osceola counties. (Orlando Sentinel)

Got shots? The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that one unvaccinated child in Pinellas County has contracted measles so far in 2018. CDC urges parents to have their children inoculated as they go back to school to avoid infection, which can be lethal. (Miami Herald)

Brush your shoulders off. UCF welcomes its most accomplished incoming class yet as the Knights head back to class today. The enrolling students all have higher GPAs,  SAT and ACT scores on average than previous years. UCF’s enrollment surged past a total of 67,500 students and online enrollment jumped 50 percent this year. (UCF.edu)

Dangerous by design. City council members vote today on the “High Visibility Enforcement,” an agreement between the Florida Department of Transportation and the Orlando Police Department aimed at reducing bicycle and pedestrian deaths in Orlando. During the 39-week initiative, city officers will conduct extra patrol in four areas in the city with a high rate of cycling and pedestrian accidents. In “Dangerous by Design 2016”, an annual report on pedestrian safety in urban areas, the Orlando area ranked third deadliest of the 20 most dangerous metro areas for walking in the United States.
