đŸ€”Unfinished business

Babies born the year that construction began on the I-4 Eyesore are now seniors in high school.

PULPISM 101: THE I-4 EYESORE

WHAT IS IT? The tallest building in Seminole County, 18 stories high, that sits smack dab next to I-4 East, just past the Altamonte Springs exit. No one is sure exactly when it earned its nickname, but it was sometime around 2005 when it looked like this.

WHO BUILT IT? Christian satellite station SuperChannel 55 started construction on the “Majesty Building” in February 2001. The station’s president, Claud Bowers, called it a “pulpit to the world.” His goal was (is?) to build it out with television studios, banquet facilities, offices, and retail space. The first two years of construction were productive until donations dried up. Then construction halted
 for 15 years.

HOW DO ORLANDOANS FEEL ABOUT IT? Some generously refer to it as “uncompleted,” but a real local will just call it for what it is — fugly. Many hoped that Hurricane Irma would blow it over, others wish it would be torn down. In 2017, Orlando Weekly named the ‘I-4 Eyesore’ as the best Halloween costume of the year. And this week, and in honor of Orlando’s 143rd birthday, Orlando-based Rock’Em Socks added the Eyesore to its newest line.

WILL IT EVER BE FINISHED? In May 2018, Bowers promised that the Eyesore would be completed in “8 to 12 months.”  We’ve heard similar promises before, so maybe don’t hold your breath. But, there was a spark of hope just a couple of weeks ago, when the lights suddenly came on for a night and Orlandoans reported visible progress on the windows and parking structures. As far as we know, construction on the Eyesore is based on religious donations. We’re hoping for a miracle.

USAGE: “At least they built the I-4 Eyesore far enough away from Disney that tourists won’t see it.”

WHAT'S GOING DOWN IN PULPTOWN

‘State of the City’. On Tuesday morning, Mayor Buddy Dyer gave his State of the City speech, which included “60 Reasons to Love Orlando.” (Btw, it was his 60th birthday.) He listed achievements such as the Trust Act and the Mayor’s Committee on Multicultural Affairs, as well upcoming projects like parks and affordable housing initiatives. (Orlando Sentinel)

Totally batting an eye. The Florida Bat Conservancy is trying to convince Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs to allow them to build bat houses, arguing that bats are the top predator of Zika-carrying mosquitoes and other bugs. If allowed, a grant will pay for 30 houses to be built in the county, adding to the already 600 that the Conservancy has built in Florida. Mayor Jacobs fears, however, that the little flyers  will pose a rabies risk. (Orlando Sentinel)

New survey, who dis? WalletHub released a study that ranked Orlando as the best city in Florida to find a job and 13th best city to find a job in the whole country. They used metrics including job opportunities and growth, monthly median salary, unemployment rate, average work and commute time, and housing affordability. (WFTV 9)

On fire in the kitchen. Orlando-based firefighter Lt. Emmanuel Washington finished third in the finale of the “Food Network Star” TV cooking competition on Sunday. The hazmat lieutenant has perfected his culinary skills through cooking for his team and volunteering for Orlando charity events like “MAN UP n’ Cook Urban Father’s Day Cook-off.” (Orlando Sentinel)

As Jimmy Fallon would say, EW. Did you know that your dog’s bowl is super gross? Unwashed bowls can harbor bacteria like E. coli, salmonella, and staph (all very bad things!), according to an American Kennel Club vet. Their suggestion? Treat your dog’s bowl like your plates and wash it every doggone day. (Click Orlando)

Give us some slow food. While Florida didn’t even rank in the top ten states with the most fast-food restaurants, Orlando ranked as the No. 1 city in the country with the most. In between our stops at Subway, McDonalds, and Taco Bell, we’ll work on showing a little more love to our local restaurants. (Inquisitr)
