What Orlando is talking about

The University of Central Florida recently installed security cameras at entrances and exits on campus in an effort to scan coming and going license plates. The reason behind this is to better enforce safety and security for its students.

The license plates are scanned and then compared against law enforcement databases to ensure there is no threat on campus, that the plate numbers are not of stolen vehicles, license suspensions, or tied to someone of criminal interest.

The cameras, called LPR cameras, have previously been used in other cities and on other college campuses, where crime has dropped significantly.  But some folks are worried about what police will do with this information and if it’ll lead to arrests over petty crimes.

While UCF’s cameras were installed earlier in the year, they were put to use this month. UCF’s Police Chief Carl Metzger said that “UCFPD is not interested in monitoring anyone’s whereabouts with the exception of those who are likely to be connected to criminal activity.”

In other news…

A Polk County woman spent six nights in jail after turning over her husband’s guns to authorities while her husband spent one night in jail for trying to run her over. Local officials have taken to Twitter and written letters to the state attorney’s office urging to have her case dropped; meanwhile, attorney John Morgan said he’ll defend her free of charge. What's up in Mills 50?

On Friday, we shared our first video in our Neighborhood Spotlight Series on Mills 50 — it was a video inside the “new” (read: polished) Wally’s. Later this week, we are spotlighting one of our favorite restaurants in the area, home to tasty tacos, plantains, and crispy fries.

But we want to hear from you: what do you want to know about Mills 50? Its history, its culture, or its future? Have questions about its hot housing market? Or its history as the Asian restaurant epicenter in Orlando? Or wondering how it got to be so colorful, so accepting, and so culturally diverse?

Let’s explore Mills 50, from its craft cocktails and good eats to its arts and culture.

Send us your Qs and we’ll pick three of our favorites to put up for a vote. 👍

Then stay tuned: next week, we’re taking you on a fun journey through these Mills 50 streets.
