What Orlando is talking about

Gov. Ron DeSantis signed the bill legalizing electric scooters in Florida on Tuesday, effective immediately. This means that e-scooter companies such as Lime and Bird could start popping up all over the Sunshine State.

If you’ve been to Tampa lately, you might have already tried your hand at navigating its busy streets on the Bird scooters (meanwhile, I, Katie, barely survived Razors in 2000). It launched its pilot scooter program in May.

Even though they’re now legal, it’s ultimately up to each city to determine whether or not scooters will be used locally. Earlier this year, the city’s transportation director Billy Hattaway  said we still needed to work out kinks in our current bike share programs before we entertain the idea of scooters.

We can’t blame him. Electric scooters have been a hot debate since they came on the market and many cities across the country aren’t sure they’re worth the hassle or even safe.

The discussion on scooters is getting heated on our Facebook if you want to join in. Or you can reply to this email, subject line: Scooters Yay/Scooters Nay and give us your two cents.

Get to know this Orlandoan: Ricky Ly

Our video producer, Kayla O’Brien, recently sat down with local foodie Ricky Ly for our “This or That” series. Ricky is a local food expert who documents his journey through Orlando’s diverse restaurant scene on his blog Tasty Chomps.

He also moderates the popular Facebook page, Orlando Foodie Forum, where locals go to debate what’s good in our culinary world and also what isn’t. He hosts foodie meetups at restaurants around town, where locals can get to know other food enthusiasts while trying some new local grub.

Ricky graduated from the University of Central Florida and is now a civil engineer in Orlando. He started his blog in 2008. He’ll also become a dad for the second time in a few months.

“I’m a civil engineer by day. Food writer sometimes by night,” Ricky said. “Here I am liking food. If you like it too, cool. If not, that’s cool too.”

Find out if you and Ricky agree about Orlando’s best burger joint and whether turkey legs or Dole Whip reign supreme at Disney World.
