🧐 Talk about a split decision, Orlando

Get to know Todd Ulmer, owner of Aku Aku Tiki Bar, Stardust Lounge, Frosty's Christmastime Lounge and Fuel.

YOU HAD ONE JOB

As we dive into downtown in our latest neighborhood spotlight series, we asked what you were really itching to know about the area. As of this morning, it was a three-way tie between where to go on a first date, recommendations on the best late night eats, and where’s the cheapest parking. Well, everybody’s a winner here at Pulptown, so we’ve decided we’ll (eventually) answer all three.

But first, we’re shining our spotlight on someone who gives downtown (and other parts of Orlando) a little more sparkle. Todd Ulmer is the owner of Stardust Lounge, Aku Aku, Fuel, and Frosty’s Christmastime Lounge and a visionary in Orlando’s bar scene.

We asked him about all of his themed endeavors, where he comes up with this stuff and how he brings it to life for all of us to enjoy. If you haven’t counted down to Christmas, been snowed on, nor had a snowcone at Frosty’s yet, have you really fulfilled your downtown bucket list?

Check out our video here and learn more about Ulmer here.

FOOTBALL SEASON ISN'T OVER 🏈

If you’re one of the many fans who found themselves bored AF at that super sad Super Bowl, boy do we have some good news for you. The Orlando Apollos, our brand new home team, will make its debut this Saturday night at Spectrum Stadium, against our frequent nemesis in what the rest of the world calls football, Atlanta.

The Apollos and the Atlanta Legends are two of the eight founding teams making up a new league, the American Alliance of Football (AAF) that’s kicking off a 10-week season this weekend. But of course, our team’s the best. Legendary Florida Gators Coach Steve Spurrier will be making the calls (and, we hope, rocking his visor), and the roster is stacked with talent from the Sunshine State including alums from Florida, FSU, and our beloved UCF Knights.

Kickoff’s at 8 p.m. Saturday at Spectrum Stadium and tickets start at $20 on the team’s website.

In other news …

  • State Rep. Anthony Sabatini, R-Howey-in-the-Hills, is rejecting calls for his resignation from Democratic Party leaders over a high school photo showing him in blackface, which Sabatini says was an “immature” prank and not a racist act. (Orlando Sentinel)
  • Remember that Sunpass scandal? State lawmakers want the Department of Transportation to crack down further on the contractor who screwed up the system’s upgrade, resulting in long waits, confusing bills, and a lot of hassle for commuters. (Orlando Weekly)
  • Rents are on the rise (again) in Orlando, up 3.1 percent to an average of $1,060 a month for a one-bedroom, and outpacing increases elsewhere in the state and the nation. (Orlando Sentinel)
