👟 Who runs Orlando?

RUNNING THROUGH THESE STREETS

New Year’s resolutions come and go, but one that almost always remains is: working on our fitness. Establishing a new habit is hard, so, to make things easier, we asked three of our faithful followers to share their favorite running routes around town. Check ‘em out below, and feel free to send in your own personal favorite route by shooting us an email at hello@pulp.town, subject line: Get fit or die trying.

The quick and dirty: Stephanie (@3280run) swears by this jaunt around Delaney Park. Complete a breezy 2-mile loop by starting at Mills Avenue and Gore Street, running east on Gore to Hampton, and Hampton to Anderson. Then hang a quick left on Anderson to end back at your starting point on Mills.

For extra motivation: Kristy Jassak (@proseccoandpalmtrees) gave us the rundown on a scenic, 3.5-mile Winter Garden route (keep reading — it includes beer!). Starting at the fountain in downtown Winter Garden, head west on the West Orange Trail through the downtown corridor. Run under the shaded canopy through old Winter Garden until you reach the crossroad into Oakland Park. Stop to take photos of the historic oak tree by Lake Brim (to your left), then take a right to run up to a beautiful view of Lake Apopka.

When you hit the end of the road, keep following to the right to head back out of the neighborhood, taking the West Orange Trail east back to Winter Garden. Finish off your run at Plant Street Market, where you can stop for a beer at Crooked Can or a juice at Press’d. For a bonus mile — and to truly earn your post-run pint — add on the nature trail loop next to the lake in Oakland Park.

Make it a fun run. Local artist and personal trainer, Dena Davis (@denadavis), makes running fun by challenging herself to run a “state.” She does this by outlining a route that follows the shape of a state, and, in the past few months, has already completed 16 states. Sometimes this means scaling fences and sneaking through restaurant alleyways, but she gets the job done. Her mission? To run all 50 before summer ends. You can also mix it up by checking out a new neighborhood or by joining one of the local run clubs. We suggest the Track Shack weekly group run through the Mills 50 neighborhood or the Thornton Park Graffiti Junktion’s Running for Brews club.

While we highly encourage running and staying fit, we can’t leave out the fact that Central Florida ranks third in the nation for pedestrian deaths. All this to say, wear your reflective gear, map your route ahead of time, and always look both ways.

WHAT'S GOING DOWN IN PULPTOWN?

New products for patients. Edible cannabis has technically been legal for Florida’s medical marijuana patients since voters approved Amendment 2 back in 2016, but a lack of rules surrounding those products has kept them out of the marketplace thus far. That could change with a recent announcement from Trulieve — the state’s largest medical marijuana provider — saying the company plans to begin selling items like fruit leather, honey and olive oil. (Orlando Weekly)

For locals only. Disney’s 3-day Discover Ticket is back for 2019, but it will cost you slightly more this year. For $175 — that’s $16 more than last year — Florida residents can visit any three parks, with no blackout dates. The package must be purchased by June 27 and used by June 30. (Orlando Sentinel)

On the rise. A new report by legislative auditors finds nearly 29,000 registered sex offenders and predators reside in Florida — an increase of 53 percent since 2005. Orange County has the overall highest number of offenders, with 2,299. The report breaks down information about sexual predators by race, age and county but doesn’t offer any reasons for the rise. (Associated Press)

Well, that’s mildly terrifying. A pack of wild monkeys carrying a deadly herpes virus is growing in population at Silver Springs State Park, and wildlife officials say human intervention will likely be necessary at some point. The animals can spread the virus through bites or scratches, but no cases of human transmission have been reported as of yet. (WFTV 9)

All aboard the Virgin Express. In a rebranding that’s sure to inspire plenty of jokes from teenage boys, Brightline has announced it will change its name to Virgin Trains USA sometime before the end of the year. The rail company currently operates high-speed trains in South Florida and plans to begin construction on a line between West Palm Beach and Orlando International Airport this March. Last call for your questions on SoDo. If you’ve been following along, we launched our first neighborhood spotlight in December and spent the last few weeks exploring the SoDo neighborhood. We want to know what you want to know about the SoDo neighborhood, its history, culture, or character. Give us a shout here for a chance to see your question answered in a future newsletter.

Have a fun weekend, Orlando!
