🍯 We're ending the week on a sweet note, Orlando

Welcome to Sister Honey's, home to award-winning pies.

COME ON OVER TO SISTER HONEY’S 🍯

Sister Honey’s has been a sweet spot in the SoDo neighborhood since 2012 when owner Evette Rahman opened the place on Michigan Avenue. The name was born from her late mother’s nickname, given to her by her family for her sweet demeanor. Evette’s mother, Eulalee Runcie, had long toyed with the idea of opening a bakery. It wasn’t until she passed that Evette was able to make that dream a reality.

For a woman who learned to bake by watching and helping her mom in the kitchen, with no pastry or cooking school experience, Evette has been extremely successful in the competitive baking world —she has won the Best of Show at the APC National Pie Championships for three consecutive years. The winning pies were her Sensational Strawberry Cheese Pie, Peanut Butter Satin Pie and the Super Crunch Pecan Pie. She credits YouTube for teaching her new recipes and techniques.

“Sister Honey’s is not for people who love intricate piping and precise frosting work. It’s more of a homestyle bakery,” Evette said. She and her husband Andy work full time in the bakery.

During filming, Kayla O’Brien, Pulptown’s video producer, tried the coconut cream pie. When we asked her what she thought of the pie, she simply replied: “AMAZING.”

Wanna give that coconut cream pie a try? Sister Honey’s is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at 247 E. Michigan St.. Be sure to tell ‘em we sent you.

Check out our full 90-second video with Sister Honey’s here. It’s pretty sweet!

WHAT'S GOING DOWN IN PULPTOWN?

The tides aren’t the only thing that rise. The Metro Orlando area has seen a spike in home and apartment rents in 2018, according to a report Zillow released Thursday. Having increased by 4.4 percent, Orlando is outpacing average rent increase across the U.S., which was just 0.5 percent. The shortage in affordable housing doesn’t help either. Jaimie Ross, president and CEO of the Florida Housing Coalition, said, “There are not enough apartments for everyone that needs them.” (Orlando Sentinel)

Coal plant problems. A recent lawsuit filed by residents of East Orange County claimed that Orlando’s coal-burning power plants have caused a spike in rare cancer cases. With the affected area spanning nearly 30,000 residents, the lawsuit claims that the plants have poisoned their homes and public areas with metal, chemical and radioactive residues. The suit calls for the Orlando Utilities Commission to shut down the coal plants and cease the emission of these pollutions. (Orlando Sentinel)

It’s good to be born in Florida. We have great news for people born in the Sunshine State: You might live longer, according to a study by the Associated Press. The average life expectancy for a Floridian? 80.1 years. The lowest in the country was Mississippi, where the average life was 74.9 years. The study considered factors like high unemployment rates, low income and low education rates. (Tampa Bay Times)

It sounds better than it is. Florida’s most significant minimum wage increase — a bump of 21 cents — will go into effect in Jan. 2019. While it sounds good, Orlando’s population increase is outrunning the addition of high-paying jobs — the city’s population has increased by 51 percent saw 51 percent increase in population in the last 17 years, but only a 5 percent increase in income. In other words, the wage improvements are good, but will likely not have as great an impact on minimum wage employees as we’d like to think. (Orlando Weekly)

Panic (school) room. In a Senate measure filed Wednesday, silent “panic” alarms for emergency situations would be required in public school buildings. These alarms would then alert local law-enforcement agencies. Called “Alyssa’s Law,” after 14-year-old Alyssa Alhadeff, one of the 17 victims in the February mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, the proposal would require each building on public school campuses to have at least one panic alarm for lockdowns, active shooter situations and other emergencies.
