❓ We've got a question for you

The Kissimmee SunRail station is a big draw due to location and convenience.

THE CITY CURIOUS: VOL. 1

Last month, we asked you to submit questions about Orlando and vote on what you wanted us to answer. Today we’re answering a question reader Ashley Zehel submitted that was our biggest vote-getter. It’s actually a few questions, all about SunRail. What is there to do at each stop? Which ones are walkable to nearby “attractions” and which are good for “park-and-rides”? We asked local experts to share their opinions, and we rode the rail ourselves to get y’all informed. We’re starting in Kissimmee and working our way north with four stops today and four more in Tuesday’s newsletter.

Stop 1: Kissimmee: Downtown Kissimmee is quaint, historic, and kid-friendly. The station is walking distance to many great restaurants and shops including Big John’s Rockin’ BBQ, Broadway Pizza Bar, Willy’s Wieners (people love their t-shirts), 3 Sisters speakeasy, Lanier’s Historic Downtown Marketplace, and Makinson Hardware. If you head southwest from the station to Kissimmee Lakefront Park (the city invested $30 million to create a destination for all ages starting in 2005), there are multiple playgrounds, a scenic trail on the lake, and GoDTO Project Manager Courtney Reynolds’ favorite part — pavilions with a fireplace where you can hire a city employee to make s’mores for you and your guests (at least that’s what she’s been told). Definitely stop by for a pic of the Monument of States. Head a little north of the station and check out Abracadabra Ice Cream Factory for ice cream, bounce houses, and some Florida sunshine. The Kissimmee stop is a stone’s throw from their waterfront, which also has great walking and biking trails. You can even rent a pontoon boat and cruise around the lake.

Stop 2: Sand Lake Road: Sand Lake is more of a park-and-ride stop, though the nearby shopping and eats are easily accessible with a rideshare. Many commuters to downtown park at the Sand Lake station, because it’s convenient and added bonus: free parking. If you’re looking for fun, Restaurant Row is a 10-minute drive away and I-Drive is even closer, depending on traffic. Places to check out if you’re over that way: Florida Mall, the Premium Outlets, Escape Room, Mango’s, all of Icon Orlando 360, Pointe Orlando, Cooper’s Hawk Winery, and definitely Restaurant Row.

Stop 3: Orlando Health/Amtrak: The station behind Orlando Regional Medical Center is usually filled with doctors and nurses in scrubs, but it’s also the main stop for Amtrak. The old train station is definitely worth a visit. Parking is hit-or-miss, but there are some free options. This station is walkable to nearby Orlando Brewing, the SoDo Shopping Center, if you need to make a Target run or are craving Tin & Taco or Gators. Also, within walking distance: Pulse Memorial, Numero Uno Cuban, and Brick & Fire Pizza.

Stop 4: Downtown Church Street Station: This station is convenient to all of downtown. It’s walkable for your fun times in the sports and entertainment district to Orlando City Soccer Stadium, Amway Center, Camping World Stadium. If you’re looking for lunch, try The Rusty Spoon, Market on Magnolia, and Lion’s Pride, or Panino’s Pizza if you’re looking for a quick and greasy slice of pizza. Enjoy the nightlife at Church Street, Wall Street, or Orange Avenue, there are too many places to name there, truly. Or take in a little culture at the Orange County Regional History Center and Orlando Public Library, City Arts Factory, and Sak Comedy Club. For a nice walk, head to Lake Eola Park and meander through Thornton Park.

We’ll pick the SunRail routes up again on Tuesday. If we missed your go-to places when heading south from Poinciana, let us know by replying here or send us an email to hello@pulp.town.

WHAT'S GOING DOWN IN PULPTOWN

“A classic case of ‘Stand Your Ground’.” An Uber driver shot and killed a man who chased and threatened to shoot him in Polk County early Tuesday morning in what the sheriff is calling a “classic case of Stand Your Ground.” Jason Boek was under the mistaken impression that his ex-girlfriend was in the car, so he chased the car down, pulled in front of it, blocked it, and walked toward it, threatening to shoot. The Uber driver, who had a concealed weapon permit and is a licensed armed security guard who just finished police academy, fired one shot and Boek died on the scene. (WKMG Click Orlando)

99 problems but a scholarship ain’t one. An Evans High School senior just received the surprise of a lifetime after being awarded a $100,000 scholarship through the BeyGOOD and Shawn Carter Foundation. DJ Khaled announced Wednesday night that 17-year-old Keshawn Morgan, a member of the Boys and Girls Club of Central Florida, was the recipient of the scholarship at the Jay-Z and Beyonce OTR tour. A big rig safety net. When a man threatened to jump off the Kirkman Road overpass above the Florida Turnpike on Tuesday, semi-trucks traveling in the nearby vicinity pulled up and parked their rigs underneath while the Orlando Police Department Crisis Team members worked to talk him down safely. Back in April, we shared a similar story of truckers who did the same thing near Detroit. (WFTV)

Amendment 13 on the chopping block. After Leon County Circuit Judge Karen Gievers ruled that Amendment 13 should be kept off the November ballot due to misleading language, the future of dog-racing in Florida will first fall to the Florida Supreme Court.  Amendment 13 is supposed to prohibit racing greyhounds or any other dogs for wagering; however, if passed, the amendment would only outlaw wagering on the outcome of races but it wouldn’t actually prohibit the races themselves. Gievers said that “Contrary to the words presented for consideration by voters, the amendment would not end dog racing (she’s right here as this is what the amendment states it will do) nor would it eliminate wagering on dog racing (this is where it becomes confusing because the amendment says it will eliminate wagering). In short, the language is misleading, inaccurate and incomplete.” The Florida Constitution Revision Commission (CRC) voted 27-10 to place the amendment on the ballot for the November election. Florida Hospital goes Bucs-wild. Florida Hospital, soon to be Advent Health, signed a 10-year naming rights deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to name the team’s headquarters and training facility Advent Health Training Center. Florida Hospital was named the exclusive hospital of the Bucs six years ago. (Orlando Sentinel)

Central Florida officials are All Aboard. On Wednesday, the state board issued $1.75 billion in federal tax-exempt bonds to All Aboard Florida for its Brightline passenger-rail system that is planning to extend north to Orlando from West Palm Beach. Treasure Coast residents have raised concerns about safety and quality-of-life impacts of higher-speed trains running through their communities, issues that may come along with the expansion— but Brightline officials promised board members that they wouldn’t be affected. Central Florida officials have backed the expansion, and see it as an alternate link from South Florida that could complement SunRail here in Orlando. (Orlando Sentinel)
